Mumbai, October 29 The State government is planning a modification in the Development Control Regulations (DCR), 1991 for Mumbai to ensure that crèches are provided for children in institutions which have more than 500 women employees.
The state urban development department (UDD) has issued a notification inviting suggestions and objections from the public regarding the proposed modification.
The notification says that the modification will ensure that a crèche of minimum 20 square metres built up area will be provided in institutional, assembly business or mercantile and industrial buildings where the total number of female employees is 500 and more.
It notes that the Womens Policy, 2001 mentions that the lack of crèche facilities hinders the mobility of women and adversely affects the growth of children left in non-supportive atmosphere. Therefore, crèche facilities are required to be provided in public places, markets, along the roads and in various commercial, industrial and other places where women work.
Officials from the state UDD said that some cities whose DCRs were approved recently already had these provisions.
However, since the DCR for cities like Mumbai and Pune had been approved earlier, the provisions had not been incorporated in them.
The government was taking steps to ensure that the special provisions would be incorporated and it would take around four months for the legal procedure to be completed.
