ET : Women for Good Governance – conducts workshops on women’s property rights : Oct 16,2007
For a good cause
Women for Good Governance (WGG) is a body working for the empowerment of
women in India. Women’s Political Forum was the name given to the
organisation, when they started a year ago, but later it was changed to WGG,
as people were wary of the term “political” associated with the name of
their organisation. Ramita Mehta, Co-founder, WGG is one of the few women
who has dedicated her life towards the betterment of women. She doesn’t
hesitate in taking extra effort in making the lives of the suppressed,
downtrodden and the neglected better in various ways. Hence, she started the
‘Health Charitable Trust’, a NGO dedicated towards the betterment of women.
She explains, “I give loans to women at a nominal interest rate and return
the interest amount to them in different ways like insurance policies, etc,
when they return the loan,” she says. But is this something that she wanted
to pursue since her childhood? She refutes, “I wanted to join politics. I
love bringing happiness on people’s faces,” she says. She too, believes,
like many others, women in India are suppressed and there is a lot that
needs to be done for them. But she is different from others in many ways, as
she has gone to the grass root level to make a change. “My husband has a
software firm in India and I am working with him for the past four years. I
spent all my earnings for the betterment of women,” she concludes. Mehta
concludes, “I want to set up a legal cell as property rights are one of the
paramount concerns for women in India.”
