BNHS GUIDE TO ENDANGERED BIRDS OF INDIA
MUMBAI: The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) will release a book Threatened Birds of India Their Conservation Requirements written by BNHS director Asad R Rahmani on Tuesday.
A first of its kind, the book lists all the threatened and endangered bird species of the country, highlighting reasons for their dwindling numbers and the need to conserve them.
Unlike tiger conservation, there has been absolutely no attention to bird conservation. Destruction of bird habitats, impact of pesticides and bird poaching are why many species are threatened, said Rahmani.
The book includes detailed information on 15 critically endangered, 15 endangered, 52 vulnerable, 66 near threatened bird species in India with articles on various aspects of bird protection. Of these, Maharashtra has seven critically endangered, four endangered, 15 vulnerable and 18 nearthreatened bird species.
