Want to vote in the upcoming Assembly elections but are not sure about your voter ID or your polling booth? No sweat. Just dial 1290.
The city collectorate has hired 24 MTNL call centre employees to set up a toll-free helpline to voters queries.
According to the Island city deputy collector (election), Sanjay Bhagwat, people in Mumbai do not want to spend much time to check if their names are on the voters list etc. To help them, we have started the helpline. Presently, the helpline is available between 7 am and 9 pm. If calls are overwhelming, then it will be made round the clock. We have planned a meeting with various service providers so that people can call this number from their mobile phones as well, said Bhagwat. For now, the calls can only be made from MTNL numbers.
Bhagwat hopes the helpline will boost the citys voting percentage. We are expecting more than 60 per cent voter turnout in the assembly election
Our staff is also helping citizens with how to correct the information in form no. 6, he said, adding that up till now the helpline, which started two months ago, is getting a response. However, the service is being provided only to those who live in the island city.
Congress corporator Rajendraprasd Chaube said, This is a proactive step taken by the authorities. But the service should be fast. I am happy that they are hired professionals for the job who will be able to deal with citizens and answers their queries politely.
