Wilson calls students to ‘Realeyes’………Farah H Chitalwala
On the occasion of World Disability Day, Wilson College hosted a programme to sensitise the public to problems of the visually-challenged.
Over 3,500 people participated in Realeyes. “It helped us understand the psyche of a visually challenged person and how they cope with the world,” said Sean Sequeira (18).
Participants were asked to complete a series of activities along an obstacle course, while blindfolded. Other activities includedreading a Braille watch, clicking a photograph based on directions received through sound, treading a rocky course, typing on a keyboard and identifying the value of coins. “Through this experience they will realise the difficulties faced by the visually challenged,” said Sam Skariah, vice principal of Wilson College.
The college allied with NGO Vision India, which conducted an eye donation drive and free check-ups for participants. The event was started two years ago when the college started Andrews Vision Centre, which is a training centre for the visually impaired. The centre houses advanced speech and scanning software which is used by the visually impaired students in their studies.
