UID card process to kick off from Dec……Linah Baliga
Mumbai: Mumbaikars will soon get their unique identity number (UID) cards.The process will begin from December 1.
This year,during the Census operations conducted in May,the citizens had also filled forms of the National Population Register (NPR) that were essential to prepare biometric-based Unique Identity (UID) number cards.
The state is in the process of finalizing parameters and vendors for Mumbai.So far,the state governments IT department has finalized only one vendor for Mumbai.At least,10 vendors will be needed for the 24 administrative wards.The process of finalizing vendors is currently underway.BMC has got its first vendor.We are currently working out the modalities of the pilot project to be conducted.One vendor could probably handle three wards,but that is yet to be decided, said Manisha Mhaiskar,additional municipal commissioner.
Once citizens visit the biometric centre,which is yet to be decided for 24 administrative wards,a `know-your resident (KYR) central government form along with states KYR forms need to be filled.Then biometrics will be carried out by the vendor.The biometrics process includes taking impression of all 10 fingers of the hand with the image of the iris.All the data collected from citizens will be sent to a Bangalore server.After it is checked,UID cards will be issued to citizens after three months., said Ravivara Prasad,the first vendor chosen by state government for Mumbai.
One biometric centre will have five biometric machines.Down the line,whether its for pension or any interface with the government,one would require UID cards, said Prasad.
State finalizes 14 enrollment agencies
The first phase of the unique identification card or the Aadhar project has just been completed.The state has finalized 14 enrollment agencies to carry out surveys and enroll people.
The selected agencies have received specialized training.The state IT department,which is monitoring the project,is hoping to compile information of all the citizens by March next year.The union government has decided to pay Rs 50 per enrollment till the end of the current financial year.TNN
