Work on unique ID project from November……Nisha Nambiar
The district collectorate will roll out the Centres Unique Identification Number project, of which the district collector is the chairman, in November. Officials said the collectorate would soon carry out the collection of data for the same.
District collector Chandrakant Dalvi had earlier announced that his office would, after the census drive that concluded on June 15, collate the data, appoint an agency for the purpose and collect fingerprints of those registered under the census. For Pune, the work on the project will commence in November, he said.
The project will ensure that every citizen aged above 15 will have an ID card carrying a unique identification number. Under the census, we have listed the houses and have data of each family member in a household. This drive will entail getting the fingerprints of all those registered, an official said.
He said the agency appointed by the district administration would help in providing the data collected during the census. With the census data already available, it will help in the unique identification project drive.
All citizens will receive a unique 16-digit number under the Central project. With public partnership being the key to the project, the project will ensure the support of industries, mobile companies and banks. The district is expected to record a 25 per cent increase in population since the last census conducted 10 years ago, when the district recorded a population of 72.67 lakh. The projected population is 91.42 lakh. The mega project, Aadhaar, is expected to help one in getting a new mobile connection or even opening a bank account. The apex agency managing the UID project will also commence operations in the entire state in November.
