2 businessmen, cop, arrested for taking bribe
Mumbai: Two Indore-based businessmen, who were trying to bribe a police
officer in lieu of a favour in a cheating case, were caught red-handed by
the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) when they tried to pay Rs 5 lakh to the
officer on late Friday. An assistant commissioner of police, Cyrus
Davierwala, who tried to force the officer to accept the bribe and favour
the businessmen, was also arrested on Saturday.
While the two arrested businessmen identified as Kishore Wadhwani and
Anil Sharma are from Indore in Madhya Pradesh and are into manufacturing and
exporting paan masala, ACP Davierwala is posted with the GRP. All the three
have been remanded to police custody.
According to the ACB, the Dhariwal group which manufactures the pan
masala under the brand name Manikchand had filed a private complaint about
copyright in the Indore court against the Wadhwanis for selling fake
products using their name. The Wadhwanis manufactured paan masala under the
name of Mallikchand. The Indore court had directed the Mumbai Metropolitan
court to inquire into it. The 8th Esplanade court in turn asked the Azad
Maidan police to register an FIR.
Assistant police inspector Mahendra Janrao was investigating the case
and he had gone to Indore court. He obtained some documents (evidence) which
would have put the Wadhwanis in trouble. Meanwhile, the duo tried to bribe
Janrao and when that failed they went to Davierwala, whom they knew well.
Davierwala has worked in Mumbai police and had five months to retire. He
arrived at Azad Maidan police station on Friday, met Janrao while insisting
that he accept the bribe and destroy the evidence. “The conversation was
secretly recorded by Janrao,” said DCP (ACB) Vilas Tupe.
On Friday, when the duo arrived to hand over the bribe amount of Rs 1
lakh to Janrao, the ACB arrested them. Later, ACB carried out a search of
ACP Davierwala’s residence at Andheri and arrested him.
