MUMBAI: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the CBI investigating the bribery case involving senior income tax officials on Sunday searched the office and residence of commissioner Anirudh Rai. Meanwhile, the CBI on Monday arrested assistant commissioner Anjali Bambole thus taking the number of persons in its custody to three.
The CBI on Friday had arrested additional commissioner of income tax Sumitra Banerjee and her husband Subrato for demanding a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore from a Thane-based builder. During the investigations, Sumitra reportedly told the CBI that part of the bribe was to be paid to her senior, Rai. The latter was not available for comment.
A CBI official confirmed the searches on Rai but refused to elaborate. “We have not recovered much during the search. But investigations are on,” he said.
Bambole, who was Sumitra’s junior, had come under the scanner after the CBI verified that she too had demanded bribe and already accepted Rs 10 lakh from the builder. “On Monday, the CBI recovered Rs 6 lakh cash, property documents of three plots in Panvel, three plots in Nagpur and a flat in Andheri (W). Besides, we have got some more incriminating documents from the flat. We are studying the documents,” said an official.
Meanwhile, the CBI also claimed to have traced two more lockers of Sumitra at IDBI bank in Mumbai. “We recovered Rs 59 lakh in cash. We also found gold jewellery and ornaments whose valuation is still in progress,” the official added.
