Quiet please! No-honking day on April 7 ….Nitasha Natu | TNN
Mumbai: Mumbai’s traffic cops are planning a ‘No Honking Day’, a first-of-its-kind programme anywhere in the country, next month. It has been tentatively slotted for April 7, which is also World Health Day and traffic officials say the connection is deliberate. Health experts and environmentalists agree that the link between continual exposure to noise and a host of diseases, including high blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, is well-established.
“Very few European countries allow people to honk on the street continually and unnecessarily. It’s only on special occasions that sirens are sounded or horns are used,’’ DCP (traffic) Harish Baijal said on Thursday.
