Now, national song in BMC schools |
MUMBAI: Bereft of any real achievements to use as its February 2007 election plank, the ruling Sena-BJP alliance in the BMC has decided to latch on to the Vande Mataram controversy.
Mayor Datta Dalvi will convene a special meeting of the 227-member BMC House on Thursday wherein Sena leaders will move a notice of motion to enforce the singing of Vande Mataram in all BMC schools.
The Sena had played the Vande Mataram card in the past too. In 2004, ex-Sena corporator Parag Chavan moved a notice of motion before the BMC House to make the singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in all civic schools.
The resolution was passed by the House and forwarded to then municipal commissioner Karun Shrivastav for his comments.
In the special meeting to be held this Thursday, leader of the House and Sena corporator Sunil Prabhu will demand that the notice of motion be enforced in all 1,188 civic schools.
“There is no politics involved in this. Vande Mataram is our national song and we want that every civic school student should start his day with Vande Mataram and end it with Jana Gana Mana. In fact, even private schools should do the same,” said mayor Datta Dalvi…
