No cuts if Mumbai lakes receive ‘water traget’ by July 15
MUMBAI: The Mumbai civic body, pinning hopes on a bountiful monsoon, may do away with the ongoing water cuts if three-four lakh million litres of water is collected in the lakes by mid-July.
“We are expecting a quota of about three-four lakh million litres of water in all the six lakes by mid-July. This means there should be at least 60 mm of rainfall on average daily, and overall 1,000 mm of rainfall till mid-July,” a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official from the hydraulic department told PTI here.
Currently, all the lakes are collectively holding 1,32,748 lakh million litre of water and at this time last year, the corresponding figure was 1,53,937 million litres of water.
“We intend to withdraw the water cuts if we are able to achieve the target of at least three-four million litres of water. Or else the water cuts will be extended at least till July 31 and then the situation would be reviewed,” the official said.
“If there is regularity in rainfall in the catchment area then the lakes will surely fill up. We expect the regular and bountiful rainfall in July,” he said.
