Model Colony to tackle garbage menace
PUNE: The Model Colony Parisar Sudharna Samiti plans to launch a waste management awareness campaign for a cleaner Pune to mark World Environment Day next month.
The committee will approach different organisations to help spread awareness on the advantages of garbage segregation.
“This is an effort to reach out to citizens to convince them that having a garbage-free Pune is the responsibility of each individual residing in this city. This cannot be achieved overnight and a lot of encouragement and awareness is required for making Pune a cleaner city,” Shyamala Desai, secretary of the committee said.
She said that many residents in Model colony have been successfully practising garbage segregation for years.
“There are some areas and societies in the city that are following garbage segregation, but enough is not being done on this front. We want to spread the idea of decomposing wet garbage at home and selling dry garbage to rag-pickers. If each individual accepts the responsibility of disposing his own garbage and keeping his doorstep clean, the problem could be solved,” Desai said.
Last year, villagers of Urali Devachi — where the city’s garbage is disposed of — had a terrible time as the landfill site had caught fire, she said. “If our campaign is spread throughout the city, there wouldn’t be a need to dump so much garbage as people will start making compost out of their wet garbage.”
