Mumbai: Inspector Sanjeev Kokil, who shot to limelight after he got IPS officer A K Jain a r re s t e d eight years ago for demanding a bribe, has done it again. On Thursday, he was instrumental in the arrest of two jewellers who offered him a bribe to go slow in a cheating case. Kokil is senior inspector in the MRA Marg police.
The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) arrested Sunil Goenka and his brother Sashi Goenka, who offered Rs 5 lakh to Kokil to stall the probe in a cheating case involing them and Sunil’s wife Sheetal. The duo was subsequently released on a bail of Rs 1 lakh each.
Sheetal’s brother Mukesh Zaveri lodged a complaint alleging that while their father, Bansilal Zaveri, was admitted to Bombay Hospital last year, Sheetal forged his signature and operated the family’s bank locker and siphoned jewellery worth crores. Sunil and Sashi were named as conspirators.
Kokil said, “When the duo learnt that they would be arrested, they obtained anticipatory bail.’’ A few days later, Sunil and Shashi approached Kokil and asked him to stall the investigations, for a payment.“Kokil informed the ACB. On Wednesday, the duo invited Kokil to Hotel Karma in south Mumbai,’’ said deputy commissioner of police (ACB) Prabhakar Satam. The ACB arrested the duo while handing over the money.
