Cops arrested for demanding bribes |
In two separate cases, two police officers, one from Shivaji Park police station and another from MIDC police station, were caught demanding bribes from a waiter and a businessman respectively.
In the first case, sub-inspector Appasaheb Mohite from the Shivaji Park police station in Dadar was caught by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding Rs 10,000 from a waiter who had purchased a gold chain from a thief. Mohite was arrested after the ACB got confirmation that Mohite had demanded the money from Mohammed Farooque in Mahim.
According to the ACB, on April 13, Farooque, who works in Hotel Maqdoomi in Mahim, was detained by inspector Mohite stating that he had purchased a gold chain worth Rs 18,000 from a thief Ram Prasad.
Mohite allegedly threatened to arrest Farooque in the case if he did not pay him Rs 10,000. The senior inspector of Shivaji Park S Sanghvi ordered Mohite to release Farooque, but Mohite while releasing him, asked him to pay the money after a few days. After verifying that Mohite had indeed demanded the money, the ACB arrested him on Thursday.
In another case, complainant Anil Saple, who works in a private marketing company, was granted interim relief by the sessions court in an alleged cheating case. The investigating officer then reportedly demanded Rs 60,000 to give a favourable report. The court has also asked for the MIDC police’s report in connection with Saple’s bail.
Saple approached the ACB and they laid a trap for Dalvi. However, sensing trouble, Dalvi snatched Saple’s cellphone which he was going to use to signal the ACB team waiting outside the police station.
Deputy commissioner of police Vilas Tupe said that though Dalvi did not accept the bribe, witnesses had earlier verified the demand and on that basis the ACB arrested Dalvi on Friday.
