BMC to spend over Rs 7 cr to keep three city beaches clean ………Sharad Vyas | TNN
The BMC is pulling out all the stops to ensure that beaches in the city are clean.
The civic body will spend a little more than Rs 7 crore over the next five years to spruce up three major beaches—Versova, Madh and Manori. The plan will ensure that the beaches remain free of tonnes of plastic that accumulate over months.
“These beaches have become quite dirty following their use during festivals. The fisherfolk also make them filthy. Employing contractors will ensure that a beach is cleaned up after an event,’’ a senior BMC official said.
Following the clean-up of the three beaches, the civic corporation will focus on some of the others, such as Aksa and Gorai.
Part of the contractors’ job will be to ensure the use of beach-cleaning machines, which will be stationed on the shores at all times.
Litterbins at intervals of 500 m and complaint kiosks will be provided on every beach, the official said. The contractors will have to work throughout the year to ensure that the beaches are squeaky clean after festivals. If the contractors are found to be shirking responsibility, they will be fined, he said.
The proposal for cleaning the beaches will be put up before the civic standing committee on Wednesday. However, if the standing committee is not convinced and feels the rates offered are on the higher side, it can withhold awarding of the contract.
