MUMBAI: A BMC inspector attached to the K-West ward in Andheri was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a car finance agent in Andheri on Tuesday.
While the ACB has arrested inspector Suresh Ganpat Varik, it is verifying the role of senior inspector, Kazi, whose name had cropped up in the probe.
The complaint by the car finance agent stated that he had failed to pay the gumasta licence fee for his Andheri office in 2009. In December 2009, he paid Rs 1,000 and also a fine of Rs 500 as late fee. On February 25 this year, two officers揖azi and Varik預rrived at his office and demanded to see the gumasta documents, he said. Gumasta is a licence which a shopkeeper needs from the shop and establishment department of the BMC by paying a fee every year.
The two than demanded that if he wanted the gumasta licence for this year, he should pay Rs 3,000.
On February 26, Kazi brought down the amount to Rs 2,000 and asked the complainant to give the money to Varik. The complainant approached ACB, which caught Varik red-handed.
