BMC approval is a must to dig borewells
MUMBAI: A day after three persons fell into a borewell in Mahim and died, the BMC on Friday issued an order that it was mandatory to secure its permission to dig borewells in the city. If the correct procedure is not followed, Mumbaikars will be liable to punishment.
It was believed that the borewell in Manjewadi, which is three metres in diameter and 30 feet deep, was dug illegally by some people to draw water, despite that the fact the BMC shut it just a few days ago.
“The permission for borewells is to be taken so as to avoid damages to water tunnels, sewerage tunnel and other utilities passing below the ground level. The necessary instructions have also been given to the concerned municipal departments in this regard,” said a senior civic official.
Recently, the construction of borewell by a local citizen in Malad had caused major damage to a water tunnel and affected the city’s water supply. With this view, the BMC has ordered that citizens and borewell operators don’t undertake digging of borewells without obtaining prior permission of BMC.
