CSR activities:
Community development/social welfare – We, at Tata Metaliks, believe in returning to society what we earn and improving the community we serve. We regard our community as a major stakeholder and accordingly identify their needs and address their concern areas. We have a team of separate committee of members who look into all community development affairs and a team of 41 volunteers who put their best foot forward in the welfare programmes.
In the year 2004-05, we undertook several community development initiatives in the field of health, education, career opportunities, and infrastructure development for the nearby villages of Gokulpur, Maheshpur, Amba and few others. Through our social welfare programmes, we aim at strengthening their trust and faith in us. We believe that initiatives like maintenance of solar-powered street lights, commissioning of tube wells, maintenance of National Highway – 6, and so on are a source of immense confidence on our own business proceedings as well. Promoting the interests of disadvantaged and impaired sections of society – We are aware that the disadvantaged and impaired sections of society are the most neglected of all. Hence, to promote their interests, TML has organised neighbourhood rehabilitation programme named “Aksham se Saksham” for them. We arranged for wheelchairs through the Government Rehabilitation Centre for villagers in and around the Gokulpur village. In the interests of women development – We believe that women empowerment is of immense importance in the development of a community. We have a team of women volunteers who take active approach in making the women of local community self-dependent and confident. They undertake to educate them, train them in stitching and other vocational activities. Keeping their health concerns in mind, we also organised special cancer detection camps wherein PAP smears were taken from women suspected of cervical cancer and sent to SSKM Hospital, Kolkata for examination. Apart from this, adult women literacy programmes are also organised for women from Amba village. The Company, being an equal opportunity player, invites applications from women candidates as well for employment and/or internship.
Sports promotion – The Company understands the necessity and importance of physical and mental fitness of the employees and hence organises annual sports and picnics for them, keeping their recreational interests in mind. A gymnasium is built within the premises of the Plant for the benefit of the employees. Tata Metaliks also sponsored a football tournament in the neighbouring village.
Employment generation – We, at Tata Metaliks Limited, ensure to deploy human resources at its fullest and thereby seek to search good talent among the local villagers. We chose to impart drivers’ training to the unemployed youth of the neighbouring community and simultaneously acquire driving licence for them. The second batch of the drivers’ training has been successfully completed and they were simultaneously absorbed in various industries located at Kharagpur.
Promotion of educational facilities – We promote education and learning facilities among the local educational institutions. With the help of TCCI, we provided financial assistance for setting up Science and Geography laboratories in Gokulpur High School. We also took an initiative to sponsor higher education for meritorious students pursuing Science education. Books were donated to the local school at Gokulpur and Shishu Shiksha Niketan.
Prevention of employment of child labour – The Company ensures that no child labour is engaged within the plant premises. As per the Standing Orders of the Company, no individual below 18 years of age is supposed to be engaged in employment of any form. To ensure that none of our suppliers / customers adopt child labour in their operations, we have made the above a pre-condition for awarding a contract / works order.
Others (specify) – Apart from the above, the Company seeks to improve general infrastructure in its community. Health check-up camps, eye care camps, pump machine maintenance training, general safety awareness training, gas safety training, first aid fire fighting training, nutritional survey camp for school children, tree plantation programme are some of the other community development initiatives undertaken by Tata Metaliks Limited. Tata Metaliks is always encouraging its employees to volunteer in such programmes and, as a form of recognition, rewards them with the “SEVA RATNA AWARD”. We wish to pool in a trust for such purposes to enable independent execution of our community development programmes. As a part of TCCI, the volunteers are working in various schools and destitute children’s associations in Kolkata for imparting education, civil awareness, safety awareness, mid-day meals, etc. We also calculate the Tata Index for Human Development on an annual basis for quantifying our efforts towards community initiatives. For the year 2003-04, our score was 660 out of 1000 and we were placed third in the entire Tata group.
