Mumbai A teenager hanged herself on Monday evening for no apparent reason, the sixth student to commit suicide in Mumbai in the New Year.
Shivani Singh, 17, who was in Standard XII (commerce) at SNDT College, Malad, was alone when she hanged herself at her home in a chawl in Poisar, Kandivli (East). The Samta Nagar police said her father, an auto rickshaw driver, was at work, her 11-year-old twin brothers were attending tuition classes, and her mother and her aunt, who stays next door, had gone out together, leaving her watching cricket on TV. When she returned, Shivanis mother found her dead.
She was an average student but the family never exerted pressure on her. As the eldest child, she was pampered by all. We can think of no reason that drove her to end her life, said Mahendra Singh, her uncle.
Man kills self
A man killed himself from the roof at a chawl in Shivaji Chowk, Vile Parle, on Tuesday. His was at least the 12th suicide, including those of the students, this year.
Mangesh Dhumak, 27, left a note, reportedly saying he was sorry for the trouble he was causing. His family and police say he was upset because he had no steady job.
Dhumaks mother lives in Ratnagiri but was in Mumbai for treatment. His aunt and mother returned from hospital and found him hanging from the ceiling, said assistant police inspector Vilas Kini of Vile Parle.
Dhumak used to be a sales executive with a soft drinks firm but had been jumping jobs for the past one-and-a half years, the police said. His uncle Sanjay Ramane, at whose home he had lived for five years, said, Mangesh never discussed his problems with us and we never asked him to. But he had struggled to hold on to any job for more than a few months.
Yatin, a neighbour, said Dhumak rarely interacted with others. Dhumak has a younger brother and younger sister. His father died a few years ago.
