NGOs to rally for welfare of stray dogs…….Linah Baliga
While the Supreme Court mulls over the decision on whether nuisance stray dogs should be killed, NGOs and animal lovers will given a clarion call to humanity by rallying for the welfare of nuisance dogs and push for reconsideration of the decision and the inhumanness of the Act, on Thursday.
“We do not want stray dogs to be killed. The way to curtail dog population is by sterilising them on a war footing. BMC should get rid of garbage, which is a source of food and gives them energy to procreate. This two-pronged attack will go a long way in controlling them,” said Anuradha Sawhney, chief functionary, people for ethical treatment of animals (PETA).
“Killing the stray dogs isn’t the solution. The Central Dog Rules of 2000 clearly states that dogs should be sterlised and not killed. So, BMC cannot supercede the central Act,” said Atul Shah, ‘Viniyog Parivar’.
“What defines nuisance? What can we do to stop these helpless dogs from becoming a nuisance?” asks Arvind Shah from ‘Karuna’.
We want to stop the helpless stray dogs from becoming targets, that is the main purpose of this rally. We hope to make the authorities situp and take notice, he added.
Only those rabid dogs which cannot be treated should be killed, opine some NGOs.
