Specialised courses The careers of many bright and intelligent children with disabilities have come to a standstill because of the lack of institutions of learning which are also disabled-friendly. But there are a few institutions which have bridged this gap. Hero Mindmine Opportunity calls! A pilot programme that trains persons with disabilities for the fast-growing B.P.O. industry and helps in placing them. Hero Mindmine and N.C.P.E.D.P have started a unique initiative to enhance employment opportunities for disabled people in IT-enabled services industry, such as for call centres and business processes outsourcing (B.P.O.). Hero Mindmine, part of the Rs 7,500 crore Hero group, is one of India’s training and resourcing solutions organisation for I.T.-enabled services and customer service industries. The call centre and B.P.O. industry provide a custom-made career opportunity for people with disabilities. Given the safe and world-class working environment, door-to-door transport from home to office and back, fixed working hours and mental, not physical, ability being the key – jobs in this industry draw upon the strengths of variously disabled people. Recognising this opportunity, Hero Mindmine and N.C.P.E.D.P launched a pilot programme to train and help place persons with disabilities in this industry. With experience of training more than 2,000 people, Hero Mindmine will conduct the training and also subsidise the cost through a 100% fee waiver. On March 18, 2004, Hero Mindmine professionals conducted an assessment of 21 physically challenged candidates in the N.C.P.E.D.P office. The objective was to identify prospective employees for a call centre. Ms Promilla, speech therapist, assessed individuals for voice transactions, Mr Lalit did a physical assessment and Ms Alka tested the grammar and writing skills of the candidates. Out of 21 candidates, seven were identified for voice-based training and two for non-voice based training, which was conducted at Hero Mindmine training centres in Noida, Janakpuri and South Extension for approximately one month. For more information, please contact: Hero Mind Mine I.I.L.M. Label Us Able managers The Institute for Integrated Learning in Management’s (I.I.L.M.) Community Service Centre offers free management education for physically disabled students under the ‘Label Us Able’ manager programme. Many bright physically disabled students who have qualified in the All India Admission Test are rejected at the final interview in management courses by management institutes on the assumption that there will be problems due to the environment if disabled students are taken on. Practically speaking, there are very few physically disabled professional managers, though there are many disabled entrepreneurs. I.I.L.M. provides opportunities for physically disabled students to study management courses for managerial positions students under the ‘Label Us Able’ manager programme. It wants to augment their mental and intellectual ability and unleash their potential. Disabled students can thus contribute towards the efficient growth of the economy. Eligibility and selection Selection is made on the basis of marks obtained in Standard XII. Suitability is determined by the candidate’s knowledge base, physical ability and performance in the final interview. The medium of instruction is English. There are no fees for the course, and the classrooms and the overall environment is disabled friendly. Management programme This management study programme is especially designed to develop future professional managers from amongst students who have physical disabilities. There are 10 modules; each is of six months. Physically disabled students can join any module depending on the minimum education level required for the module and also physical requirements of the managerial jobs. Final examination will conducted at the end of each module. Certificate, Diploma/Degrees will be given to qualifying students at the end of the module/s. The modules are: Module 1: I.I.L.M.’s Certificate in Management Studies with Specialisation: Minimum qualification required is Standard XII Module 2: I.I.L.M.’s Diploma in Management Studies, with specialisation Module 3: I.I.L.M.’s Advanced Diploma in Management studies with specialisation Module 4: B/DBM (Bachelor/Diploma in Business Management) (Pass)* Module 5-6: B/DBM (Hons.)* Module 7-10: MBA (Master/Diploma in Business Administration)* * Applied to universities for the award.
