BMC scouts for dump yard as both grounds in Mulund and Deonar would be packed beyond capacity by 2015
The city will not have a place to dump garbage in the next five years. The two dumping grounds, one at Mulund and the other in Deonar, will not be usable after 2010,say civic body officials.
While the Mulund dumping ground will be shut down in two years time, the one at Deonar can be used for another five years, the officials added.Around 4,500 metric tonnes of garbage is being dumped every day at Deonar. At Mulund ground,2,000 metric tonnes of garbage is dumped daily.
On a daily basis, the city generates nearly 6,500 metric tonnes of garbage. This includes 2,500 metric tonnes of silt and debris, besides 25 tonnes of bio-medical waste.
Until 2008,the BMC had the site at Gorai to dump garbage, but it was shut citing logistic reasons.
Now,racing against time, the BMC has been desperately scouting for a garbage dump. And so far,its efforts have not borne fruit.
We are identifying suitable locations at Thane,Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli.Once we zero in on the site,we will develop it with the local civic bodys co-operation, said Additional Commissioner (Eastern suburbs) Aseemkumar Gupta.Considering the citys burgeoning population, the BMC will up its garbage processing capacity from 4,000 metric tonnes to 6,500 metric tones, he added.
A civic official, who did not wish to be named, said the dumping grounds at Deonar and Mulund would be shut down in a scientific manner.
We will ask people to segregate wet and dry garbage. While the dry garbage will be processed into fertilizer, wet garbage that will be down to 25 per cent of the total garbage, will be carried to the dumping ground, said the official, adding,On a public-private partnership,we will generate fertiliser and power.
Congress corporator Rajendraprasad Chaube, who has often raised the issue in the civic house, said the civic body spends crores to cart garbage from the city to the two dumping grounds which are situated at least 40 km away.Often, garbage trucks dump garbage at open plots along the eastern or western express highways, said Chaube.
I do not see any long-term planning by the civic administration to tackle the garbage problem. They should publish a white paper which will declare to the public the details of the garbage issue, he added.
