Starting April 1, ensure that your wet and dry waste is segregated, or your garbage may not be lifted. In an ambitious step towards garbage segregation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to hire 24 dry waste collection vehicles for the city, with one dedicated vehicle for each ward.
The civic body also plans to establish one dry waste collection centre in every ward, thus ensuring a more efficient effort at segregation.
This will reduce the money that the municipal corporations spends on paying private contractors managing the citys dumping grounds, and will also ensure that the citys rag pickers get financial independence.
The civic body plans to let registered rag picker groups establish and operate these collection centres.
A civic official said: Despite our earlier efforts, citizens have repeatedly complained that the municipal corporation lacked the infrastructure to conduct sustained segregation efforts. Now, with exclusive infrastructure being developed, the ball is firmly in the citizens court.
The municipal corporation also plans to tie up with recycling units that will buy the waste directly from the collection centres.
The civic body said they would take help of local citizen groups and advanced locality mangements (ALMs) for the initiative.
We hope we dont have to rely on harsh measures such as not picking up the garbage to enforce segregation, the official said.
The civic body has been running trials of waste segregation in a few of the citys wards.
Currently, there are 14 designated dry waste collection centres in the city, which function in various stages of efficiency.
Officials admit that segregation hasnt been a hit in a lot of places.
However, experts are skeptical of the plan.
Kishore Bhamre, assistant director at Pratham, an non-government organisation that works with rag picker
children, said, The plan is good on paper, but how is the municipal corporation planning to introduce transparency in the system? The right groups have to be selected to ensure an efficient job.
