Want to campaign for traffic safety, says Big B
The Mumbai Traffic Police will now approach actor Amitabh Bachchan to be their brand ambassador after he tweeted on Tuesday that he had earlier volunteered to campaign for traffic safety. The actor, in a series of posts on the microblogging site, expressed anguish at the death of 27 people in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early on Monday.
He expressed shock over frequent accidents on the expressway and the way in which driving licences are issued in India. Pained to hear of terrible accidents on Mumbai-Pune Expressway every other day, Bachchan tweeted. He also wondered if motorists are trained for driving on high-speed expressways.
I have spoken often to volunteer to do campaigns for the police force, but none came forward… even suggested I would fund them !! one tweet said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Brijesh Singh said if the actor has shown interest in helping them, they would surely approach him. If people like Amitabh Bachchan come forward and show interest, it would be of great help to the police force to communicate with the commuters and drivers, said Singh.
Earlier this year, actor Jackie Shroff was made the brand ambassador for the road safety week campaign 2012 that was organised by the traffic police to spread awareness among drivers.
Bachchan who through his tweets on Tuesday also questioned whether Indian drivers are trained to use the new state-of-the-art highways, follow traffic rules and speed limits also made comparisons with the German autobahns that have no speed limits and the Lamborghinis used by the Italian highway patrol to nab traffic offenders. I appeared for tests in USA for a driving licence and it was gruelling and tough. Three traffic violations and you lose your licence, he tweeted.
