City anchor: traffic police drive to protect children from accidents
Schoolteachers are getting traffic lessons from the police so that they, in turn, can teach their students how they can avoid getting into an accident.
With accidents having killed 50 students under the age of 16 and injured 257 last year, the traffic police began the drive on July 20, aiming to train at least 800 teachers from schools across the city. So far, they have trained 300 teachers.
The project aims at training teachers from both BMC and private schools. Teachers will be briefed on traffic rules and regulations, the dos and donts while walking on roads and what precautions to follow while crossing the street. The teachers will pass on the training to students in the classroom, said inspector Rohidas Dusar of the Mumbai traffic police department (training).
To hold childrens interest, the traffic police plan to distribute animation video CDs on road safety. We have introduced games similar to snakes and ladders and ludo relating to traffic regulations. Apart from making them aware and protecting them from traffic accidents, this would help create a generation that would be particular about road discipline and help make the job of traffic management more easier, said an officer.
The traffic police had undertaken a drive for college students too to ensure they would not cause road accidents. After Nooriya Haveliwala, driving under the influence of alcohol, had rammed her car into a group of police officials at Marine Lines in January, the traffic police visited colleges and held seminars on drunken driving and related laws and penalties.
