institutions come to mind (for mumbai)
1 is at dadar called the pearl abortion center –near the station on
the western side –run by a doctor who performs only sterilisation
services for the poor (vasectomy/tubectomy/abortions etc). Article had
come in the papers many years back –it said he takes token fee of Rs
1 and sees close to 50 to 150 patients a day–wonder how he does it.
2nd is the clinic in byculla which comes in the way while going from
nair hospital (near some marathi talkies) towards where Joachim
Arputham of sparcindia.org sits–its a muslim trust and I think its
called semco or something like that. Somehwere in that area is also
the railway hospital but that is for railway staff only.
There could be many more but most of us don’t know whether there is
any RATINg system for all these places –Low priced must not mean Low
quality but that happens due to a number of reasons
1 volume of demand
2 Unable to sustain themselves or grow
3 More qualified people can’t join or better equipment with time does
not come while old eqpt deteriorates
4 Overworked founders
There are some great initiatives such as jamkhed.org near Ahmednagar.
Maybe one can know more from goodnewsindia.com or indiatogether.org
Mr Kewal Semlani info@mahadhikar.org at one time used to help a lot of
allopathic institutions with their import/customs related problems of
medical equipment.
You could also write to cehat.org for information–they run 2 services
–project dilaasa at bhabha hospital bandra and at the jarimari slum
somewhere in andheri east or thereabouts.
Acash.org, locostdrugs.com, journal of medical ethics
http://www.issuesinmedicalethics.org/, VHAI -voluntary health asscn of
india, and a couple of specialised yahoogroups such as
http://mfcindia.org/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pha-ncc/
mfriendcircle@yahoogroups.com etc could help you better with your
query since they comprise of doctors and public health researchers
etc. Prabha Krishnan could also be written to.
Dr Leo Rebello may also have information on alternative medicine
diagnostic techniques etc
mlbd.com is for books on ancient indian knowledge and medical
diagnostics could be a part too of that
knowledge–ayurveda/siddha/unani etc.
