The Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Scheme is all set for a revamp so that more poor patients can avail its benefits.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday announced that the improved scheme would be implemented in public as well as private hospitals soon.
The new scheme is set to help more than 2 crore families across Maharashtra.
To begin with, the scheme will be implemented in eight districts across including Gadchiroli, Dhule, Raigad, Nanded and Solapur. After every three months, the area for the scheme will be increased gradually so that it covers the entire state eventually.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar argued with the cabinet for more than an hour about how he could allot Rs 100 crores for the scheme. However, the rest of the cabinet stressed that the scheme was for good of the people and it should be implemented.
Earlier, the patients had to approach the state government authorities to avail the scheme.
The officials in turn allotted them the money which they paid to the hospital. However now the scheme will be cashless through which the patients can simply approach the hospital directly.
The government has tied up with an insurance company which will directly deal with the hospital. The patients will be thus less hassled.
In an interesting development, Chavan also said that the scheme will now cover more than 900 odd diseases.
Earlier the scheme only covered five severe ailments including cancer and heart problems.
With the inclusion of many other basic ailments, the poor patients, especially in rural areas, will be benefited. The scheme can be availed by anyone earning one lakh per annum or less.
