Diabetes, hypertension screening programme in slums from next week
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations health department will launch a screening programme in Mumbai slums for diabetes and hypertension from next week. Assistant health officer at the Information Education and Communication(IEC) department, Dr Pranita Tipre said the programme will start as an extension of BMCs slum Arogya Abhiyaan, originally planned for communicable diseases.
The five-month plan is part of an initiative under the National Urban Health Mission for six metros. Besides Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore will be covered under this programme.
According to sources in BMCs health department, teams will be deputed to five slums daily to screen all men and women above the age of 30. Diseases like diabetes and hypertension are no longer associated with the rich and the affluent. Our civic hospitals see huge numbers of slum population with these problems, said Dr Tipre.
She added that the aim was to diagnose these problems at an early stage, for targeted intervention and treatment. Like the Arogya Abhiyaan launched this year, per day two slums will be selected in the eastern suburbs, two in the western and one in the town area. According to sources, the screening is likely to be inaugurated in in mayor Shraddha Jadhavs constituency, Wadala.
