CBSE to award schools with good sanitation facilities….Bhavya Dore
To boost sanitation standards across schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has instituted National School Sanitation Awards for its affiliated schools. The CBSE had previously introduced the National School Sanitation Initiative to inculcate good sanitation habits among students.
The awards will be given out on the basis of the schools responses in the Online School Sanitation ratings. (The ratings) have been instituted with the purpose of recognising those schools that are taking significant steps towards effective sanitation and improvement in service delivery leading to the desired behavioural and attitudinal changes towards hygiene and sanitation, said the circular from the board dated June 29.
The ratings are expected to infuse the required dynamism in schools towards sanitation management. Parameters on which the schools will be adjudged successful include how innovative they are in using technology and whether their initiatives have the potential to be effective in the long term.
Schools will also be able to add to their online sanitation ratings by achieving activity points through activities such as providing improved facilities for girls, coming up with water recycling and waste management models.
Every school largely follows good sanitation practices and ensures that the children are hygienic, said Indu Mathur, principal of Apeejay School in Kharghar.
Perhaps in certain places, school authorities have not looked into it adequately. This initiative may be good for sensitising such schools, added Mathur.
A few years ago, the board had proposed the setting up of health and wellness clubs in schools. The boards comprehensive school health manuals that address the issue of sanitation also deal with physical fitness, food and nutrition and behaviour and life skills.
