NO-LOSS VENTURE
MBA students offer rice-dal for Rs 5/plate in Vashi ..Vijay Singh | TNN
Navi Mumbai: Putting to good use all the strategies taught to them in their business school, four MBA students from Navi Mumbai have come up with a unique Food For Thought scheme that endeavours to serve a plate of rice and dal for just Rs 5.
This is not some charity work that we are doing. We have actually worked out an effective method to ensure that we dont suffer any losses in this venture, said
Abhishek Majithia, a first-year student of Mumbai School of Business in Navi Mumbai.
To launch their social experiment, the management friends chose the taxi-auto stand outside the Vashi railway station, where the drivers happily gobbled up the surprise lunch and gave their regular pavbhajiwala a miss.
The aim behind the Food For Thought scheme is to make wholesome and nutritious meal available to the common man without making him pay through the nose. The final aim is to create a self-sustaining unit that would independently prepare and serve quality food, Majithia said.
His friend Ajit Anand of Bharatiya Vidyapeeth Institute of Management in Belapur said, The idea came up all of a sudden. We used to discuss our course subjects and debate on high-browed management topics like rising inflation. We then decided to experiment if we can somehow use our education to bring down the cost of a basic plate of rice and dal.
As goodwill begets goodwill, a temple management in Belapur lent the youngsters their large-sized vessels and a place to cook 150 plates of rice and dal. A shippie
friend of theirs helped them in the mass cooking and even solved their problem of transporting the vessels to Vashi station.
At the moment, the total cost of food preparation and transportation comes up to Rs 781 for 150 plates. This brings the cost per plate to Rs 5.20. But we are sure we can further bring down the figure to Rs 5 per plate after we gain more experience in this field, said Reema Jain, the only girl in their group. She added that the group was also working on including extra items like papad, pickle and curd, but without incurring any loss.
