Standing committee members of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staged a walkout, forcing an adjournment, on Monday to protest the expenditure incurred by the civic body on a legal battle between the deputy municipal commissioner (general administration) Rajendra Vale and the committee.
Vale had taken BMC’s standing committee to the High Court over its decision to grant promotion to 400 staff members employed in the municipal secretary’s office and chief auditor’s office, more than four months back. The High Court upheld the standing committee’s decision following which Vale moved the Supreme Court in January.
“The civic body has already incurred expenses over Rs 45 lakh on this entire legal battle. Why should lakhs of rupees be spent at a time when the civic body is facing a financial crisis?” said NCP corporator Niyaz Vanu. Shiv Sena corporator Rajul Patel said, “Any expenses over Rs 10 lakh needs sanction from the standing committee. The administration has violated the rules.”
