Yuvak Pratishthan Launched another Mobile Medical Van
Yuvak Pratishthan launched another Mobile Medical Van for the needy and poor people of the Eastern suburbs of Mumbai. The Eastern suburbs of Mumbai needed preventative healthcare, where most of the children, women are unable to access public services including healthcare due to unaffordable or unavailable facilities. A number of illnesses affect the downtrodden people of Eastern suburbs of Mumbai. They do not use hygienic measure to prevent infection. Lack of first aid facilities in remote areas is the cause of many infections. A periodic visit of mobile medical van is much required in this area. A mobile medical van is a practical mechanism for delivering acute and preventative care in the Eastern suburbs of Mumbai i.e. Bhandup (East & West), Kanjurmarg (East), Ghatkopar (Ramabai Nagar & Kamraj Nagar) and Mankhurd, which covers the slum areas of 5 lacs downtrodden population. The most common pediatric illnesses were parasites, skin infections, fever, undiagnosed asthma, symptomatic anemia and malnutrition.
In view of the above, we have launched and started Mobile Medical Clinic that will cater to the needs of health facilities in these areas. We will work for the benefit of patients in various fields of health care.
The Medical Van is donated by “Mi Marathi Channel – Shri Adhikari Brothers Media Ltd.”
The inaugural ceremony of this medical van was held on 1 st April, 07 at our Centre at J.N. Road, Mulund (W). Dr. Shubha Raul, Hon. Mayor of Mumbai, inaugurated the Van and checked a patient immediately as she is by profession a Doctor. She expressed her gratitude during her speech, encouraged us for doing such medical activities for the needy and poor and promised to extend all possible support, co-operation in the activities of the Shri Markand Adhikari and Shri Gautam Adhikari, Chairman and Managing Director of Sri Adhikari Brothers, was the Guest of Honour. The programme presided by Dr. Kirit Somaiya and Dr. Medha Somaiya during her introductory speech, told that Yuvak Pratishthan committed to eradicate the unhealthy situation of Eastern suburb of Mumbai, by way of providing medical care through this Medical Van to the downtrodden society.
Other prominent persons were Sardar Tarasingh (MLA), Shri Damjibhai Palan (President, North-East Zone Chemists Association), Municipal Councilors (Shri Bhalchandra Shirsat, Shri Manoj Kotak, Smt. Amita Shah, Shri Vishwanath Mhaske), Shri Vinayak Kamath (Executive Member), attended the programme and expressed their views.
More than 400 local residents and social activists were present at the ceremony.
ZERO GARBAGE IN MULUND : Phase I – Fertilizer from Flower wastes : Inauguration programme of the fertilizers made from flower wastes was done on the eve of ‘Akshay Tritiya’ on 19th April, at Vijay Nagar Garden Mulund. Dr. Kirit Somaiya, Smt. Pratibha Belvalkar (Environmental Activist), Smt. Amita Shah & Shri Manoj Kotak (both Municipal Councilors) were present at the programme.
Dr. Medha Somaiya during her introductory speech, described the concept of Zero Garbage in Mulund and given importance of utilization of Nirmalya (Flower wastes) of the various temples in Mulund.
Smt. Amita Shah told that production of fertilizers from flower wastes is really innovative in Solid Waste Management.
During the programme, Piggy Banks were distributed among the Rag Pickers Women and guided them to start saving their money by putting a coin or two every day into this that will cater their needs in various way.
Four Health Check-up camps organised in the month of April for Rag Pickers in Mulund, which includes complete check-up and medication for more than 100 rag pickers ladies in the locality.
On 6th April, 15 rag-pickers participated, where 7 got benefited through medication and 8 others are for enquiry only. On 13th April, 35 rag-pickers get benefited through medication and proper check-up. On 20th April, 34 rag pickers were present and on 27th April, 41 were benefited through medication and checkup.
STAFF REVIEW MEETING : This month during the review meeting of the Yuvak Pratishthan’s staff members, we have discussed on a topic of recent cricket fever of world cup. We invite essay on the given topic from the all the members. All the members have participated and expressed their views on the topic. Two amongst all have been selected the best, one in Marathi and another in English. One can read the essay by clicking on the highlighted word.
Now, all the regular activities are stated hereunder:
CENTRE FOR SLUM STUDIES : In the month of April, Field Visits conducted for the students of Slum Studies and a Certificate Distribution programme arranged at the centre at Ruia College Matunga.
On 2nd April, visit ed Excel Industries, Jogeshwari, visit conducted for the demonstration of organic waste converter tools for composting purposes. 38 students actively participated and benefited through demonstration by Head Marketing Division, Mr. Awadhoot Panilekar of the industries.
On 4th April, A team of 32 students have been visited Turbhe Dumping Ground (Navi Mumbai), to observe & study on the waste management and disposal process. Mr. Mule, Dy. Engineer, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, interacted with the students and guided them about the process.
On 6th April, 32 students were visite d Force Training Centre, Govandi, where Bio-composting and Biogas demonstrated by Mrs. Poonam Hudar, Chief of the NGO.
On 11th April, 41 students have been visited to Shatabdi Hospital, where Biogas Plant is installed and working on large scale. Dr. Sharad Kale, BARC Scientist has designed the plant. Mr. Amit Sawant, who is monitoring the plant, has shown and guided the students about the production on large scale.
On 12th April, 35 students visited at Diamond Garden, Chembur, where they got information about Advanced Locality Management (ALM) by Mr. Rajkumar Sharma.
On 16th April, Certificate distributed among 55 students , who have successfully completed Certificate Course. The programme arranged at the centre at Ruia College, Matunga, Mumbai. Ms. Shivani Sachdeo from United Ways, Ms. Poonam Hudar from Force, Mr. Rajkumar Sharma, ALM Officer, Mr. Anand Jagtap from MCGM, Mr. Arvind Wankhede, Co-ordination Committee Officer from Dattak Basti Yojana were the Chief Guests, guided the students and expressed their views. Dr.Medha Somaiya, Co-ordinator, Centre for Slum Studies congratulates the students on successful completion of their courses and informed about the forthcoming courses, activities and field visits.
Besides, during the month, the students had arranged events of Essay Writing and Drawing Competitions at three different places for the primary & high school students. One at Anganwadi Kendra, Khar (E) where 45 primary school children were participated, second at Kandivali where 70 both from High school and primary school were participated and the third at Sion Chunabhatti, where 47 students from primary school were actively participated in the competitions.
JEEVAN AASHA : In the month of April, 87 patients have visited our office and registered under Jeevan Aasha. 36 patients have received financial assistance this month from different Trusts for different ailments. Others are under process. The following chart is showing the category of the patients / cases: Cancer 06, Heart 31, Kidney 06, Brain 03, General 30, Enquiry 11.
Besides, we have received more than 700 phone calls for enquiry / assistance during the month.
7 Patients screened for CT-Scan & 6 MRI cases forwarded to private institutions to be done at very concessional rates i.e. up to 60% & 50% discount respectively in their charges.
We are receiving regular appreciation and gratitude from the patients.
We would like to mention here a case of Mr. Ram Ashish Rai of R.No.33, Shivling Chawl, Shriram Nagar, Kurar Village, Malad (E), Mumbai 97, who had undergone for successful heart surgery in the month of April, received 100 per cent financial assistance against his expenditure from different trusts as the patient belongs to extremely poor background and was unable to perform his surgery.
SLUM INTERVENTION PROJECT : The only BCC event organised during the month of April, at Anganwadi Kendra, Khindipada, Bhandup, which includes the information about health and gynaec problem as well as awareness about HIV / AIDS, TB, STD / STI, and condom promotion etc. 60 women were present during the event and took advantage of the event.
On 19th April, NGO Forum meeting was held and discussed on advocacy. Representatives of all t based NGOs were present in the meeting.
A Health Camp was organised for the peer educators and others at Tembhipada, Bhandup, through Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra.
We are working on Peer Educators Training planned to be held in the month of May. All the ORWs are working on the training.
All the regular activities, One to One, One to Group Sessions, Condom Promotion & Distribution, Tertiary Visit, Secondary Visit, Video Shows, Lectures, Posters Exhibitions, Establishment of Condom Outlets, Treatment and Follow-up of STD patients, have been continued.
PALAVI KENDRA : Mapping completed of the two wards ‘A’ & ‘G South’, awarded by MDACS and we have started working from this month in these wards.
ORW refresher training programme was arranged during the month jointly for all the wards on 25th April, to discuss on the following issues: 1) Motivate ORW for Field Survey, 2) Distribution of Area, 3) Minutes of the Anganwadi Mahila Mandals, Self Helf Group meetings, 4) Games for capacity building programme.
Dr. Sameer Pawar from MDACs and Mr. Rakesh Mayekar, NGO Co-ordinator addressed and guided the participants. All the project co-ordinators and counsellors of all the wards along with the ORWs were participated in the programme. Regular activities are as under:
‘A’ Ward : . During the month in this ward, we have visited to 1447 families, which includes 1085 male, 1236 female, 816 male child, 863 female child, interacted with them, guided them about the health related problems. 48 ANC cases found so far. 23 were mobilized and referred to the Centre at St. George Hospital. 3 STD cases registered and referred for further treatment and care.
4 meetings held this month, 1 for Mahila Mandals and other 3 for the Health Posts.
G South’ Ward : Very first month, we have visited 6668 families, which includes 6528 male, 7480 female, 5448 male children, 4977 female children. They all have been benefited through one to one counseling. 112 ANC cases found, 9 were mobilized among all. ANC cases referred to our centre at Prabhadevi Maternity Home and ESI Hospital Worli. 6 female agreed for HIV testing and referred to VCTC. 11 STD cases found which includes 1 male and 10 female and 1 Tuberculosis patient referred to RNTCP.
‘S’ Ward : This month 1261 families have been visited which includes 6093 male, 5036 female get benefited through one to one counselling. 79 ANC cases found in all. 28 have been mobilized and referred to our centres at Savitribai Maternity Home & Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital . 9 persons agreed for voluntary testing referred to VCTC. No cases of Tuberculosis found this month.
4 numbers of meetings was held during the month with Anganwadi Mahila Mandals, where IEC material and booklets for awareness distributed among them.
‘E’ Ward : This month in ‘E’ Ward area, our Out Reach Workers had direct interactions with 3453 families, which includes 3200 male and 3511 female. They were counselled, guided and given proper guidance on health related matters, HIV & PPTCT Centre, Prevention and Family Planning.
In all, No cases found of opportunistic infections. 94 ANC cases found, out of which 17 have been referred to Nair Hospital PPTCT Centre. 1 case of Candidacies have been referred to STD Centres. 1 female referred to DIC, 1 referred for ART treatment. 4 STD cases all female, 1 Tuberculosis male were found.
36 children of the Centre were under regular follow-up of our organisation.
5 meetings with Mahila Mandals and Health posts were held during the month at the E ward centre.
Yuvak Pratishthan’s Samarpan Arogya Kendra : In the month of April, a total of 138 patients, which includes 30 new and 108 old, visited the centre and benefited through allopathic treatment & medication. 6 patients treated with homeopathic. 4 patients visited for pathological tests were done at very concessional rates.
Mobile General Checkup camps continues this month. 2 camps held Mulund area at Mulund Colony and Dumping Road. 15 patients were performed complete check-up and given medicines.
We request the citizen of Mulund, Bhandup and all nearby areas to visit the centre and take benefits of all the medication / health related problems from our centre.
JEEVAN AKSHAY (Seva Mobile ) : In the month of April, 4 camps each were held at both the centres at Kamraj Nagar and Ramabai Nagar. More than 500 beneficiaries checked, guided and provided medicines. They were performed complete health check-up.
GTB HOSPITAL : Motivation and empowerment of the patients continues with the techniques such as Music Therapy, Yoga, Diet and Nutrition, Vocational Training etc. for Rehabilitation of TB patients.
Every week 15-20 patients, which includes both male & female have been attending and taking benefits of yoga every Monday.
VALMIKI AMBEDKAR MALIN BASTI AWAS YOJANA (VAMBAY) : 12 New houses completed so far at Ghatkopar and construction of 8 houses is started this month in Mulund area.
SLUM SANITATION : The new 10 sites identified this month at Powai, Vikhroli & Bhandup. Good response received from the sites. community meeting will be organised in next month with the localities and they will be informed about the scheme and procedure. Finally NOC received from N Ward Municipal Office and submitted to MSDP after collecting all the required papers from Nav Tarun Mitra Mandal of Ghatkopar.
Follow up continues for the other sites, required papers collected and process for the registration of Mandals is going on.
Construction of toilets are in progress at 12 sites. The sites visited by our volunteers and observed the work done.
