2. PROJECT ELEPHANT:
Nilesh & Shivprasad of PAWS are formally trained in the research on captive
elephants by Asian Elephant Conservation Association in collaboration with
CUPA(Compassion Unlimited Plus Action). Since January 2007, PAWS volunteers
Sonali, Anahita, Rasika and Anuradha have been surveying the captive
elephants across maharashrta.
Shivprasad took time off from his engineering studies to travel for over 3
days to help in this survey while Kishor worked day & night to cover
begging elephants in Mumbai and Pune. We really are proud of these
dedicated souls!
A total of 35 elephants were scientifically surveyed by PAWS including
captive and begging elephants in the zoos of Mumbai, Pune and Aurngabad.
Circus elephants from Mumbai & Pune (Rajkamal Circus, Great Royal Circus,
Golden Circus, Rambo Circus, Rayman Circus) also elephants on temple duty
at Sangli, Pali, Tasgoan, Yamai temples were studied.
We thank CUPA, Animal Welfare Board & Chief Wildlife Warden of Maharashta
Shri Majumdar who gave support in this work. We also grateful to Manoj
Oswal, Dhiraj Jain, Dr. Gauri Mallapur, Anil Kataria, Shakuntala Mazumdar
and Amol Shinde for extending help for the cause.
Personally we thank Suparna Ganguly who took good charge of the guidance,
training, Travel arrangments & entire Database management of the above
mentioned project.

4. ANTI-RABIES DRIVE IN THAKURLI – 25TH NOVEMBER
More then 50 stray dogs were vaccinated within an hours with the support
of animal loving Ramesh Iyer who feeds over 50 strays daily at Thakurli –
MIDC area Volunteers Vishal Kantharia, Shiv-Prasad Phadke, Anahita kumar,
Kishor
Savle, Lalita & Nilesh participated in vaccination drive along with
Ramesh Iyer.

5. WILDLIFE RESCUE MISSION:
With the change in weather conditions, PAWS volunteers rescued several
snakes, lizards & other reptiles. PAWS team headed by Mr. Vishal Kantharia
rescued in November 2006, 2 Indian Cobras, 1 Buff Striped Kill Back,
3checkered kill back, 1 Russel’s viper, One six feet long Rat Snake, 2
Pond heron, 1 Owl, 1 Monitor Lizard.

6. Short Talk in IDA’s Tea Party on Friday 3rd Nov.
PAWS Founder Nilesh given a brief talk on Urban Wildlife in IDA’s (In
Defense of Animals) Evening tea party. The Program was hosted by Fizzah
Shah, Goodicia Vaidya & Sudnya Patkar of In Defense of Animals for
Animal Lovers in town. Shirley Advani of SOS (Save Our Strays), Brinda
Upadhyaya of ASHA (Association for Service & Healing Animals) also gave a
brief profile on their respective animal welfare activities.

7. VEGAN RECEIPE
Fall Vegetarian Chili
When the leaves fall and the weather cools thereÂ’s nothing like staying
home and enjoying some hearty homemade chili. This recipe features a
variety of delicious fall vegetables including celery, which contains
vitamin C and several other active compounds. These vital nutrients
promote good health and have been associated with lower cholesterol and
cancer prevention. Celery belongs to the same family as carrots, fennel,
parsley and dill. Its seeds can be used as food, seasoning, and natural
remedy.
Ingredients:
1 cup dried kidney beans, with water
1 cup bulgar or cracked wheat
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/2 red pepper, diced
1/2 green pepper, diced
1 medium carrot, diced
2 stalks celery, chopped small
1 cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen
1 pinch cayenne pepper
2 thin slices fresh ginger, peeled
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 cinnamon stick
3 Tbs. olive oil
1 tsp. each ground paprika, cumin, coriander, fennel, salt
1/4 cup parsley, minced
1 bay leaf
1 Tbs. soy sauce
Directions:
Soak beans for 4 hours in hot water or overnight. Drain, rinse, add 6
cups of unsalted water, bring to boil, and simmer for 2 hours. Add bulgar
and tomato paste to kidney beans and water; add bay leaf, cinnamon stick,
cayenne and ginger slices, returning to boil; cover and simmer again.
Preheat frying pan on medium; prepare the vegetables, including garlic
clove; sauté the vegetables in oil for 5 minutes; add remaining spices
and sauté another two minutes.
Add a few tablespoons of water, cover, and steam for 10 minutes. Transfer
veggies to the bean mix and cook about 15 minutes; add minced parsley and
soy sauce to taste.
