City to get 6 new flyovers by 2008
RAVIKIRAN DESHMUKH
To decongest the city roads further, Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Development Authority (MMRDA) said that work on six new flyovers will begin
from December 2007 and it will be completed within a year. At a meeting
chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Friday, MMRDA promised to
complete other ongoing works (apart from the flyovers) under the Mumbai
Urban Transport Project (MUTP) and Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project
(MUIP) by December 2008.
The six new flyovers are part of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal
Mission (JNNURM). The central government contributes 65 per cent funds for
projects sanctioned under the JNNURM and for the new flyovers, the remaining
35 per cent cost of the project will be borne by the MMRDA.
EASTERN CORRIDOR
The MMRDA has also proposed the Eastern Freeway connecting the museum
(Shyamaprasad Mukherji Chowk) to Anik (Wadala), which is expected to be
completed by October 2010. The Rs 438-crore project will have 22-km corridor
from the museum to Ghatkopar (via Anik) and will significantly serve the
Mumbai port and related traffic where major traffic generators are
refineries, wholesale markets, commercial and business areas with factories
and warehouses.
To ease traffic and improve the city network to Mumbai Trans-Harbour
Link (MTHL), which starts at Sewri, MMRDA has planned some interchanges at
Mumbai Port Trust Road, Acharya Donde Road, Eastern Freeway and Western
Freeway. The corridor, which will be known as East-West (Sewri-Worli)
Corridor, will have roads connecting MTHL on three different levels.
Sewri-Worli Corridor (left), the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link Corridor (centre)
and Eastern Corridor, which will start at the Museum and go up to Anik at
Wadala
