Cultural and art aficionados may soon have something to cheer about. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority plans to tie up with Delhi-based India Habitat Centre to build a similar centre in the city. “We are looking at replicating the India Habitat Centre model in Mumbai,” said a senior MMRDA official, requesting anonymity.
Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad met top MMRDA officials on Monday and directed them to expedite work on the plan.
The India Habitat Centre, spread over nine acres, is a cultural and artistic hub in the capital where dance, music, theatre workshops are held.
The MMRDA, which owns acres of land at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Wadala, plans to approach the state government to grant it land for the centre.
In 2006, the MMRDA proposed to build a convention centre on a 18.5-acre plot at Bandra-Kurla Complex.
