MMRDA to introduce diploam courses in Transport Sector
The aim is to institutionalize the training programmes in the transport sector which is at the cusp of changing the transport scenario in the city of Mumbai.
MMRDA will soon introduce Diploma Courses in Transport Sector to produce experts in the subject who will ultimately offer their services for modern modes of transport such as Metro and Mono Rail, said Ms.Ashwini Bhide, Joint Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. Ms.Bhide was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the second successive and successful training workshop organized by the National Mass Transit Training and Research Institute established by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The aim is to institutionalize the training programmes in the transport sector which is at the cusp of changing the transport scenario in the city of Mumbai. We are looking at tie-ups with Indian as also foreign Universities for the purpose. The 4-day training programme, held with the help of the Federal Transit Administration, has thrown open a lot of options and will certainly add value to the National Mass Transit Training and Research Institute, said Ms.Bhide further.
Rita Dagulliard, Director, Federal Transit Administration, USA, said, The response to the training programme from all the participants was very lively and provocative which only highlighted the interest they had in the workshop. The interaction with the participants not only underlined their curiosity but also kept our faculty members on their toes!
Intelligent Transportation System was the crucial subject of the last days training programme. Mr.Jerome Lutin, Distinguished Research Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology and engaged in Federally sponsored research on Land Use Planning for Transit Related Development, along with Ms.Tori Iffland, Manager of Information Technology, Central Florida Regional Transport Authority conducted the programme. The training in Intelligent Transportation System revolved around issues such as Transit Vehicle Tracking, Multi-Modal Coordination, real time information to the passengers, van-pooling and Bus Rapid Transit System for physically challenged.
The four-day training programme conducted by the National Mass Transit Training and Research Institute, established by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, was attended by more than 40 participants from various agencies such as Traffic Police, Railways, Chennai and Bangalore Metro Rail, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd., Louis Berger Group, Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). All the participants received a Certificate for having attended the Training Programme.
