Probe against BMC staff who helped land sharks swallow school plots….Geeta Desai
A year after Mumbai Mirror reported how a land-grabber had usurped seven school buildings in Bandra and Khar,Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sudhir Naik on Tuesday instituted a departmental inquiry against all the errant officials from the education and estate department of the H-west ward.
On Tuesday, during a joint meeting in Hwest ward,Naik sought all documents regarding the municipal school buildings from concerned officials. The meeting was also attended by Mumbai For Child Rights (M4CR),an NGO.
In Bandra and Khar, seven BMC schools disappeared when the dilapidated buildings in which they were being housed underwent redeveloped.Residents allege that no space was allotted for the schools in the redeveloped buildings.A majority of the students were forced to drop out of school.
Aftab Siddique, member of H-west Federation said,We sought information under RTI but never got a satisfactory reply. We also complained to the municipal commissioner but in vain. However, the state information commissioner directed the BMC to take action against errant officers, she said. When residents complained about this to the BMC,they sent notices to the developer and landlord asking for a monetary compensation. However, the officials seemed least concerned about the schools being closed down, said Siddique.
Ram Barot,a member of the Civic Education Committee said that it is a big scam. This is a clever way of grabbing land. When I was the chairperson of the committee,I had brought this corruption to BMCs notice.
