To increase the depleting green cover in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kick-started the “Clean City Green City” competition where individual residents and corporate houses can convert their premises in green zone and bag various monetary awards upto Rs 50,000.
Recently, the civic body issued a circular to all the 24 ward offices asking to them to conduct the “Clean Mumbai Green Mumbai” competition.
Civic officials said the decision will encourage the residents to participate in this drive to make the city beautiful and green. “On the corporation level, we try to take decision and create many gardens and plant trees. But the residents’ participation is always left out.
This time, it will motivate them. The BMC has earmarked Rs 2.4 crore for this competition where each civic ward will get Rs 10 lakh. The civic body will give three awards in each category,” said a senior civic official.
There are 10 categories, including bungalow, residential societies, chawls, educational institutions, industrial unites, corporate offices and government and semi government offices.
The competition will be also open for shops, restaurant and five-star hotels. Kumar Pande-Patil, chairman of BMC’s Market and Garden Committee said that while selecting the winners, they will follow certain criteria.
“People should plant at least two trees in an open area of 100 square metre and five trees at recreation grounds. We want people to plant various types of plants.
Our team will inspect the sites. People can get information and fill the form at all 24 ward offices across the city. Our team will inspect the sites,” said Pande-Patil.
N N Naik, secretary of the Friends of Trees, welcomed BMC’s decision and said, “It will motivate people to plant more trees. If people plant more tress, the pollution, temperature and noise levels will reduce and oxygen levels will increase.”
