WTI projects protect nesting olive ridleys
Orissa, April 15, 2009: In March this year, two years since it last witnessed ‘arribada’, the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Orissa has seen the spectacular mass-nesting of olive ridley sea turtles. While there has been much excitement and relief to have the nesting turtles back in Gahirmatha; the sporadic nesting, which had begun two months earlier in unprotected adjacent beaches, went almost unnoticed.

Tiger and leopard skins seized, three traders arrested in Tamil Nadu
Dindigul (Tamil Nadu), April 6, 2009: A tiger skin and a leopard skin were seized yesterday at Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, in a joint undercover operation by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) assisted by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). Three crafty and experienced wildlife traders were arrested.

Jungle cats on their way back to wild
Bansbari (Manas, Assam), March 31, 2009: Two orphan jungle cats, hand-raised by the International Fund for Animal Welfare Wildlife Trust of India (IFAW-WTI), will soon return to their natural habitat in Manas National Park, Assam. They are currently being acclimatised to the wild, in Bansbari range of Manas NP.

Diphu (Karbi Anglong), April 15, 2009: To bring home the importance of biodiversity conservation, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Forest Department set up an elaborate stall at the 21st Karbi Lammet Amei (Karbi Literary Conference), recently held at Phuloni near Diphu. Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), supported by Japan Wildlife Conservation Society (JWCS), participated along with the Forest Department in the four-day event that ended last Monday.

Canadas commercial seal hunt closes over 17,200 seals killed in just over two days
Charlottetown (PEI, Canada), March 25, 2008: Canadas Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will close the first zone of the seal hunt today after the earliest group of sealers killed 17,200 harp seals thus far. DFO is set to re-open the hunt in another area of the Gulf this Friday.

Delhi, March 25, 2009: Giving out a strong message to wildlife offenders, the Additional Sessions Judge, KS Mohi, of the Tis Hazari court, today, rejected the appeal of wildlife trader Anand Tashi. Tashi, serving the fourth year of his five-year term, had appealed for setting aside of his conviction, on a plea that he had been falsely implicated.
