Save the poor souls
Don’t just drive past an injured animal when you see the poor soul writhing in pain at the side of the road. Be kind and make the call. Timely action could save the animal’s life

The ever-swelling density of vehicles in Mumbai coupled with reckless driving has resulted in an increase in the number of injuries and accidents caused to animals.
Add to that the scarce number of ambulances and inadequate hospitals and care-centers, resulting in more animal and bird deaths than ever recorded before.
So the next time you spot an injured animal/bird on the street, please don’t look away. Call the helpline and pray that an ambulance arrives to the rescue of the injured animal.
In the last couple of years, the number of distress calls to animal helplines has recorded a sizeable increase.
“On an average, we receive at least 15 calls a day,” said Shakuntala Majumdar, president, Thane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
“Hit-and-run cases account for 70 per cent of animal death and injuries,” she pointed out.
Currently, there are 15 ambulances in Mumbai, two in Thane, one for Thane district, which covers Dombivali-Kalyan and one for Navi Mumbai.
The city also faces lack of adequate hospital care. Mumbai has just one hospital for animals, the Bombay SPCA at Parel.
“There is an urgent need to have smaller animal hospitals with basic equipment at various parts of the city. A lot of time is lost transporting the injured animal, often resulting in death,” said Majumdar.
Another reason for increase in the number of animal accidents is the filth in the city. Since the municipality does a shoddy job of garbage removal, cattle and other strays that roam around the city have easy access the food.
“The laws penalising the offenders who cause harm to animals lack teeth. There is an urgent need to amend the law and make it more stringent,” said Nilesh Bhange, honorary president and founder of Plants and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
More hospitals for animals needed
Renu Rai, President, Animal Welfare Association, Khargar
There is an urgent need for the government and municipality to take animal care more seriously. Since animal care is expensive, the masses cannot afford it and hence ignore injured animals even if they spot them.
It is the duty of the government to ensure that animal care is made available, by building more hospitals.
For instance, Navi Mumbai is a growing city, with population and vehicle density increasing by the day, but there is not even a single hospital that caters to injured animals.
The youth too should be more proactive in spreading awareness and compassion for injured animals.
The Cruelty to Animals Act too needs to be amended to deter the public from causing harm to animals.
