BMC’s rain booklet……Somita Pal
It will be easier to deal with the rains this year, at least for tourists. The BMC is coming out with a book — Guidelines for monsoon in Mumbai — to give people comprehensive information about city helplines and other monsoon-related issues.
“This is the first time we are coming out with a book of this sort. We hope it will help first-time visitors to the city during the monsoon. Right from Mumbai’s low lying areas and high tide days to contact numbers of people for queries and information, the book will have everything,” said N Narvekar, BMC Disaster Management Cell head. The book will be available at all bookstores across the city.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department says the monsoon should arrive on time (by the first week of June) this year. The waning of the El Nino current is good news for India’s monsoon current.
The rains are yet to reach the Andaman Islands. The June-September monsoon is crucial for India, since about 60 per cent of its farmlands are rain-fed.
