KEWCAL to install plant for disposal of garbage in Jammu

JAMMU, Mar 22: Kashmir Environment Welfare Cooperatives Association
Limited (KEWCAL) an NGO has offered to install a plant for scientific
disposal of garbage in the Jammu city, provided the Jammu Municipal
Corporation cooperates with the organisation and avails its services.
This offer was made by the KEWCAL chairman , Rakesh Gupta while
delivering the introductory address at a workshop held here, today on
handling and disposal of Municipal waste.
The NGO will also collect the garbage from door to door and streets
and dump the same at the plant site for its scientific disposal, he
said.
He said the Society will alter offer to take up such a project in
Srinagar city and will start it in other towns in due course of time.
The workshop was organised by KEWCAL in collaboration with Jammu
Municipal Corporation. The Divisional Commissioner Jammu, B R Sharma
was the chief guest on the occasion while Abdul Razak , Member
Secretary J&K State Pollution Control Board was the guest of honour.
Expressing concern over growing pollution level in the cities of Jammu
and Srinagar and other towns of the state, Rakesh Gupta laid stress on
the need for implementation of Central Environment Protection Act—1986
and rules framed from time to time under this act to check and control
pollution and ensure healthy environs to the people.
He said the main aim of KEWCAL is to promote healthy environment in
the state and provide the pollution free environs to the society. To
fulfill these objectives the society is launching awareness programmes
.
In his address, the Divisional Commissioner said the funds are being
released to Municipal Corporation and there is a special package under
PM’s Reconstruction Programme for the same.
He said after the release of these funds it is expected that Municipal
Corporation will be able to come upto the expectations of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, Kavinder Gupta, Mayor Jammu Municipal
Corporation said pollution is posing a grave threat to Jammu. He said
the Government should allot funds to the Corporation to fight out this
menace.
Mr Gupta said the garbage is becoming problem in Jammu and river Tawi
is being polluted. “Our efforts should be to save this river so that
it will not become Yamuna in future”, he warned.
He declared that a severage treatment plant is being installed at
Bhagvati Nagar.
Speaking on the occasion, Pawan Shastri of Jammu Yatri Bhavan alleged
that the funds given by the NGOs to Municipal Corporation Jammu were
not utilised properly. He declared that NGOs can arrange the funds but
we need the account where the money provided by us previously was
utilised.
Among others who spoke on the occasion include Vice Chairman, Jammu
Development Authority, K B Jandial, Deputy Mayor, JMC, Rani Biloweria
and Commissioner J M C, Dheeraj Gupta
