Jan 3: NGO meeting with Brig. Shard in-charge NCC
National Cadet Corps is a 95,000-student strong body in Maharashtra comprising school students from 8th – 10th std, and college students of all years of which 50 – 100 are in individual educational institutions.
Brigadier Ramesh Shard is the Deputy Director General of NCC. I had a very illuminating talk with him about the scope and activities of NCC. There are many areas of collaboration with NGOs. Some examples are nature camps, cleanliness drives, rainwater harvesting projects, environmental awareness, HIV/AIDS awareness, tree planting, blood donation drives, disaster preparedness, etc. in Mumbai or anywhere in Maharashtra.
Projects which sensitise and educate students particularly in non-run-of-the-mill ways, building their skill sets, or teaching them how to improve things in their community (where they live or study) are of interest.
Depending on exam schedules and prior committed projects, NCC students are also available for large projects of NGOs.
We felt that it would be interesting and useful for NGOs and NCC to understand each sides possibilities and interests. So a first meeting has been arranged from 3.45 pm to 5 pm on Wednesday, 3rd Jan, 2007, in South Mumbai.
To make it effective and result-oriented, it was felt that this first meeting should be of 20 NGOs. Accordingly, if you are interested, please email a small para about your activities and at least one specific possibility you see with NCC, and we will revert to you with the venue of the meeting.
