World No Tobacco Day 2009: First held in 1988 and observed annually on 31st May, World No Tobacco Day is a global event established to call attention to the effect of tobacco use on public health and to help reduce individual tobacco-dependence. The theme ‘Tobacco Health Warnings’ this year focuses on encouraging governments to adopt pictorial health warnings on tobacco product packs for maximal effectiveness. The series of events organised by CPAA to observe this day were:
23rd May 2009: A press conference, to announce the friendly cricket match to be played between film stars and CPAA panel doctors, with the support of WHO and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was held at the The Taj Lands End. The panelists were Mr. P S Pasricha (Ex-DGP Maharashtra), Mr. S J Habayeb (WHO-Representative to India), Mr. Shailendra Singh (Jt. MD-Percept Limited), Mr. Y. K. Sapru (Founder Chairman-CPAA) and film personalities Sohail Khan, Milind Soman, Aftab Shivdasani, Bappi Lahiri and Anuj Saxena. Also present at this event were cricketer Vinod Kambli and film stars Arjan Bajwa, Neetu Chandra, Raima Sen and Bakhtiyar Irani to pledge their support to the cause.
In tandem with the theme CPAA had also organised a competition for Advertising agencies to design a tobacco product pack with an appropriate and effective pictorial warning. 10 of the best agencies in the country participated out of which the top 4 viz, Mccann Erickson, Water Consulting, Network Advertising and O & M showcased their work at the press conference. The afternoon concluded with the distribution of artificial voice boxes to poor & needy cancer patients.
25th May 2009: The doctors & film stars arrived in full force at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana grounds, ready for the clash, in stunning green & blue outfits designed & provided especially for the event by Globus Stores. The Chief Guests of the evening Ex-DGP P S Pasricha, Mr. K. L. Prasad (Jt Commissioner of Police – Law & Order – Maharashtra) and Ms. Vineet Gill (National Professional Officer-Tobacco Free Initiative-WHO) inaugurated the match by releasing bunches of balloons with anti-tobacco messages. Captain, Dr. Nitin Salian won the toss & put Sohail Khan’s team to field. More than 1,500 people thronged the Gymkhana grounds to watch their favourite stars in action. While the film stars made a formidable 224, the doctors put up a strong fight and scored a total of 143. Seasoned commentators Mr. Milind Wagle & Mr. S. Kishor along-with funnyman Javed Jaffery gave the audience much more than just ball-by-ball commentary. Govinda, Nagma, Udita Goswami, Tanaaz Irani & Shweta Pandit came to cheer the teams. The film stars team of Sohail Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Suniel Shetty, Aashish Chaudhary, Arjan Bajwa, Aftab Shivdasani, Chetan Hansraj, Cyrus Broacha, Bakhtiyar Irani, Anuj Saxena, Vatsal Sheth, Shailendra Singh and Sajid Wajid defeated the doctors team of Dr. Nitin Salian, Dr. Aly Irani, Dr. Sanjay Desai, Dr. Sanjeev Gandhi, Dr. Pratap Raut, Dr. Rishikesh Pandya, Dr. Dilip Galvankar, Dr. Adil Chagla, Dr. Devendra Chowkar, Dr. Anil Singhal, Dr. Kamlakar Dandekar, Dr. Muffazal Ladkawala, Dr. Arshis Daruwala, Dr. Mandar Nadkarni, Dr. Sachin Almel and Mr. Vinod Kambli.
27th May 2009: An ENT checkup camp for the Indian Navy officers was held at the Dockyard. 235 civilians and naval officers underwent ENT cancer screening at this camp.
29th of May 2009: CPAA Delhi branch celebrated World No Tobacco day at the India International Centre, Lodi Road in collaboration with Aureate Healthcare. 8 year old Ishita performed the ‘Sarawati-Vandana’ after the inaugural lamp-lighting. This was followed by a presentation on the ill-effects of tobacco by Padamshree Dr. Viad (Artemis Hospital Gurgaon) and Dr. Sajeela Maini (Tobacco Cessation expert-Sir Ganga Ram Hospital). The Sa Re Ga Ma Pa-singing sensation, Diwakar enthralled the audience with some foot tapping numbers along-side pop star Vipin Aneja.
31st May 2009: An essay, skit, slogan and photography competition in English, Hindi and Marathi on the theme ‘Tobacco Health Warnings’ was conducted for youngsters at K C College. The event was supported by the Rotract clubs of Bombay Hills South, K C College, Hinduja College, Mumbai & Ghatkopar; Kodak India Pvt Ltd, Rotary Clubs of Mumbai Queen’s Necklace and Bombay Pier, Siyaram Silk Mills Limited, Unity Charitable Trust, Mr. Chetan Surti & Mr. Ashok Kothari. Dr. C J Joshi, Ms. Shobha John and Mr. Sudharak Olwe were the judges for the competition while, Ms. Nagma, Ms. Dolly Thakore and Ms. Aarti Chabria were the Chief Guests.
May 2009 – Four awareness talks and three detection camps were held during the month of May by the Pune branch for the students of junior Red Cross, staff of Pune Municipal Transport, Pune Municipal Safai Kamgar and Katraj Dairy. The awareness talks were attended by 560 people, while 285 males were screened for oral cancer at the detection camps.
Childhood Cancer Patients Support Group: As a part of its monthly outings for pediatric cancer patients 14 children were taken to the Golden Swan Club at Thane through the efforts of CPAA’s Susmita Mitra and Mallika Narayanan. Over three days, the children enjoyed cycling, carrom, table tennis, swimming and boating. A variety programme was organised in which the teams ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ and ‘John Abraham’ battled it out in a most un-Dostana way. Well known artists, Shubha Gokhale and Rukhsana Pathan, took the time to visit to teach them painting techniques. Aditi Dandekar from Camlin donated painting kits. On the last day, the children formed three teams – Sun, Moon and Star and put together a competitive programme of skits, music and dance. The children kept a daily diary which revealed how much they enjoyed the friendship of other children. They also learnt that they could take care of themselves independent of their parents, while their parents realised that they could start allowing their child to experience a normal childhood.
Awareness Lecture in Kolkata: Susmita Mitra traveled to Kolkata to give a well attended awareness lecture for a women’s group in Bengali.
15th UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference: Mr. Y K Sapru – CPAA’s Founder Chairman, Mrs. Rekha Sapru – Joint Secretary and Dr. Indu Nair (volunteer) attended the Reach to recovery conference in Brisbane, Australia. Mr. Sapru spoke about ‘Challenges in Fundraising by an Indian NGO’, while Indu covered Affordable Drug Initiative for Breast Cancer Patients in India.
Donation of Toys: Toys worth thousands of rupees were donated by Pina and Yogesh Mathuria in memory of Bhavana Mathuria to children at the Kharghar center.
Colours of Life – Affordable Art for Affordable Drugs: Annual Art Exhibition and Sale of Paintings (22nd June – 31st July) at Cymroza Art Gallery: CPAA is having its fifth Annual Art Exhibition and Sale at the Cymroza Art Gallery. The show was inaugurated by Mr. Nana Chudasama, Ms Lillete Dubey and Ms Shaina NC. The evening was well attended by artists, art connoisseurs and buyers.
Cancer Screening Program: On 10th June 2009, the Prevention and Early detection team was invited by Saifee Ambulance Society to Galiakot, Rajasthan for a cancer screening camp for Bohari-muslim women. A team of 25 doctors, technicians and staff screened 3000 women who came from the interiors of several villages of Rajasthan. 50% of them were advised follow-up thereafter.

‘Khazana’ unearthed at the Oberoi, Mumbai: In the dramatic interiors of The Regal Room, the most talented Ghazal singers of this decade will perform together on a single stage to raise funds for the treatment and rehabilitation of cancer and thalassemia patients through the NGOs CPAA and PATUT respectively. This fund-raising concert is the brain-child of Ghazal Maestro, CPAA patron and President of PATUT, Shri. Pankaj Udhas and has been a resounding success since its inception a decade ago. ‘Khazana’ will feature a multitude of talent such as Rajender Mehta, Mitalee & Bhupinder Singh, Anup Jalota, Talat Aziz, Ahmed & Mohammed Hussain, Penaz Masani, Pt. Abhijit Pohankar, Prof. Rita Ganguly, Ms. Srabooni Chaudhari, Pankaj Udhas and new artists like Raavi More and Neha Chimmalgi. This year will see them pay a tribute to renowned music director Late Shri Madan Mohan on the occasion of his 85th birth anniversary.
