The two awards and their categories open to competition are:
1. Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development: its for applicants who have outstanding new research proposals that adds a unique dimension to research on any of the five topics listed below
2. Medals for Research on Development: is offered for excellent completed research papers on any of the five topics listed below
The focus of the research proposals/ papers must be on any one of the following five topics:
1. The Governance and Political Economy of Natural Resource Management
2. Exploitation of Natural Resources: Trends and Environmental Implications
3. The Economics of Natural Resource Management
4. Foreign Direct Investment and Natural Resources
5. Societies and Natural Resource Management
