In Energy Conservation
Indo Rama has achieved significant reductions of thermal energy usage in its plant. Overall thermal energy used per tonne of production has reduced by about 37.8% during the last three years. The corresponding energy index (combined effect of both electrical and thermal energy) decreased by 22.2% in 2007-08 and 32.2%. 2007-08 saw a reduction of 4.4% in specific electrical energy and 28.7% in specific thermal energy vis--vis 2006-07. The Company has installed a solar water heater at plant employees’ canteen, partially replacing the use of LPG. It is now examining the possibility of using solar power for street lighting, initially at its Butibori colony and subsequently within the plant premises. Moreover, it has installed a plant that converts the domestic and kitchen waste generated inside the factory premises as well as in nearby housing colony into biogas, which is then fed back to the plant canteen thus further reducing LPG consumption. This solution also generates organic manure as a by-product, which is used to
fertilise the green belt within the factory premises. Indo Rama has also taken up a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, which has been registered with the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), GoI for Host Country Approval (HCA). The Company is undergoing the registration process with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The approved project is expected to generate 6,500 Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates per annum till 2012 (the end-year of the Kyoto Protocol).
In Education
Over the past fifteen years, the IRA Educational Society, promoted by Indo Rama, has been running the IRA International School at Nagpur. The school, affiliated to the CBSE curriculum offers quality education not only to the Company’s employees but also to other children in Nagpur. Currently, the school caters to about 1,100 children studying in Classes 1 through 12.
In a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in education, the Company has recently obtained the management of the Indian Technical Institute (ITI) at Nagpur. ITIs are vocational training institutes that award diploma for entry-level shop floor employees for various manufacturing and technical skills. Indo Rama, in collaboration with Directorate of Vocational Education and Training, Maharashtra Government, will upgrade ITI, Nagpur and help in designing industry-specific training content and help students to secure apprenticeships and employment. The formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed shortly. The Company has also been offered management of another ITI at Hinghna, 60 kilometres away from Nagpur; the proposal is currently under evaluation. Moreover, Indo Rama is exploring the possibility of taking over and managing government run polytechnics near Butibori and Nagpur.
In HIV / AIDS Awareness
Indo Rama had organised different programmes at its Butibori plant, with help of Transport Corporation of India (TCI) Foundation, ILO (International Labour Organisation) and All India Organisation of Employers (AIOE). The TCI Foundation conducted three awareness programmes for different management levels of the Company – covering policy aspects based on ILO and Government of Maharashtra guidelines, along with ‘Training for Trainers’. The Company, along with the ILO and AIOE, also conducted a workshop on HIV/AIDS’ at Butibori, targeting nearby industries of Vidharbha region.
Camps were conducted for truck drivers (who visit the Company’s plant and other adjacent industrial units), migrant contract labours and other employees to increase awareness about HIV /AIDS, preventive measures and socially responsible behaviour. The Company has also installed a condom dispensing machine outside its factory gates, so that the transient trucker community can avail of its benefits.
In Sustainability
Indo Rama believes in and practices sustainable operations. The Company has detailed policies on Quality, Energy, Occupational Health & Safety and Environment; it is now on its way to adopt a comprehensive Sustainability Policy. The new policy would create a ‘green’ organisation, with voluntary disclosure and reporting in the format required by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Initial work on the policy has already been done – the corporate vision and mission statements have been revised to give specific focus on sustainability and necessary changes in the organizational structure, systems and procedures are being mapped out.
The Company’s various sustainability initiatives can be summarised under the ‘4 C’ concept – compliance above and beyond legislative norms, conservation of resources, continual improvements and cost competitiveness.
Water Conservation & Green Cover
At Butibori, underground sewage chambers are spread throughout the factory complex and residential colonies, which then flow to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). During the monsoon, as the water level rises, the increased flow passes
through these underground pipes to the STP, where, cleaned of all its impurities, the recycled water is reused. The Company has successfully reduced its specific water consumption by about 32% over the last three years. Water conservation measures focus on the ‘5R Concept’: reduction at source, reuse, recycling, recovery and rethink alternative
and improved solutions. Effluents from the production process are treated and recycled to achieve ‘zero discharge pollution’. Indo Rama has adopted measures to continuously increase usage of recycled water. The Company also conducts various water conservation awareness programmes through the local industry associations, targeting neighbouring communities.
During 2008-09, the Company plans to execute projects that will collect rainwater from the roofs of the staff colony and the main administration building and divert the water to storage areas.
The Company’s plant at Butibori has 74% land under ‘green cover’ – against the legislated minimum of 33% coverage of open land under the green belt. This extensive green cover helps to charge the groundwater in an efficient manner. Overall, the Company recovers rainwater of about 219,000 cubic metres every year. Butibori has also developed a large garden inside the employees’ colony, which not only affords aesthetics but has now become a tourist attraction. The Company has also adopted a 34-acre plot to develop forest cover. Moreover, the original forest cover around the factory has been maintained in its original condition.
