Community Initiatives of the Taj Group of Hotels – 2007 -2008
At the Taj, all employees believe in serving people being actively involved in improving the quality of lives of under-privileged women, youth, children and the disadvantaged, which not only revives the spirit of learning in the organization but also results in transformational benefits to them.
The Taj Group has deeply committed to serving the community and has expressed this commitment through programmes evolved out of our core competencies in hospitality management in the area of food production, kitchen management, house keeping,
Event management, art & handicrafts and well-being related services � for fulfilling the above purposes
The Primary Impact Areas are:

- Promoting Artisans & Craftsmen
- Supporting Voluntary Organisations & Welfare Homes
The theme for Community Initiatives during the year has been �Building Livelihoods� which impacted more than 58000 people across the country involving an expenditure of over a crore of Rupees. These initiatives resulted in building the livelihoods of more than 252 people within an additional 1900 people being trained in soft skills. Around 4300 volunteers took part in this initiative volunteering around 38000 man hours to make a meaningful difference to the lives of the underprivileged and disadvantaged in society. To carry forward this theme, our hotels across the Group have reached out to scores of people in helping them build their livelihoods.
A few of the important various initiatives undertaken are enumerated as under:
Building Livelihoods
- Jai Mahal, Jaipur trained Garden women under the Literacy Program and enhanced their skills in bakery and housekeeping to enable them to earn their livelihood.
- Fish Cove Care installed tailoring machines and imparted special training to the women. The same has enabled most of them to join Garment factories and some of them have independently begun work at home.
- Taj Malabar, Cochin conducted training for 15 underprivileged women in cutting and stitching. They have been provided with 06 new tailoring machines and a shop near Thoppumpadi in coordination with Y�s Men International.
- Taj Deccan, Hyderabad employed 20 college dropouts in the banquet department on stipend who completed training in the hospitality industry at Dr. Reddy�s Foundation.
- Taj Retreat, Vadodara counseled 7 orphans and imparted basic skill training in the Kitchen, housekeeping and engineering department supporting their living
Encouraging Paramparik Karigars
- Hotel Chandela, Khajuraho adopted the maintenance and upkeep of the gardens, airport gardens and Poddar Chowk to make the city look clean and more presentable.
- Fisherman�s Cove, Chennai conducted a Craft Course on Housekeeping and Food Production to Tsunami Affected Rural Youths. The Project offered 6 months craft course in Food Production & Housekeeping (Theory 3 months & Practical 3 months)
- Taj Exotica, Bentota donated necessities for school children of Rambukkana boy�s school meetings the basic needs of the children.
- Taj Residency, Nasik donated a Water Harvesting model made by the engineering department for a week long environment exhibition held in the local school to spread awareness.
- Taj Krishna, Hyderabad in support with Red Cross Society organized a Blood Donation Camp for Thalesemic Patients who required blood to be transfused regularly. The same was provided to the needy free of cost.
- Taj Connemara, Chennai Volunteers help at the Manimangalam Medical Care and the hotel also provides the basic medicines to the villagers every month.
Supporting the Disadvantaged
- Taj Exotica, Goa tied up with Daddy�s Home a school for Mentally Challenged children giving children the generation of income engaging them in various activities in the hotel. eg. engaging them in carol singing for guests, purchasing greeting cards made by these children, promoting the products and displaying the products in the hotel.
- Taj, Coonoor employed a handicapped person and gave him a tailoring job in the Housekeeping department for his upliftment in the society.
- Taj President, Mumbai imparted Food Production skills to 5 handicapped students and employed them in the production department at a monthly salary of Rs. 6000/-.
- Taj Garden Retreat, Varkala has trained 2 boys who are physically impaired and has employed them in the Kitchen stewarding, enabling them to run their family independently.
- Lake Palace, Udaipur selected a few physically challenged candidates from two different organizations and imparted vocational training in trade like backer and Maintenance work.
In addition to the various initiatives undertaken and listed above, our hotels participated in a number of events. Significant amongst them being World Environment Day, Children�s Day, World Tobacco Day and New Year�s Day were celebrated across the Leisure SBUs.
Chief activities focused upon during these events were Beach Cleaning Drives on World Environment Day, Special Lunch with Games and Activities organized for the Children from nearby orphanages on Children�s Day and New Years Day and Tobacco Awareness Campaigns on World Tobacco Day.
The Beach Cleaning drive was initiated with a focus on training the employees and local members about the importance of the environment, reducing and recycling all types of wastes while the Tobacco Awareness Drive was initiated with a focus on generating awareness among people on the ill-effects of tobacco usage on health and on the environment.
