Three BMC workers arrested for demanding bribe
Three workers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) water department have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding bribe from residents of a housing society in S ward. The three were caught red-handed on Monday.
According to the ACB officials, residents of Sun City Housing Complex in Powai had been complaining about inadequate water supply to their society. “The residents had complained about this to the S ward officials in Bhandup. However, their problem was not solved. The society manager then met a worker at the valve junction opposite the Gandhinagar petrol pump. The worker told the residents to approach his seniors with the complain,” said an ACB official.
The worker took down the phone number of the complainant and said he would get in touch with them soon.
“After a while, the residents got a call from the worker who demanded Rs 40,000 and assured them of additional water supply to their society,” said the official. Refusing to pay the money, the residents approached the ACB (Mumbai) to register a complaint. The officials laid a trap and organised a meeting between the members of housing society and the three accused.
“When they were accepting the bribe, we caught them. Among those arrested are two water valve workers, Janardan Kene, Dilip Venguklerkar, and a labourer Manoj Jagtap. We are investigating the matter further,” said the official.
