Postmaster in Navsari held for taking bribe from NREGS worker
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a postmaster from Chikli taluka in Navsari on Thursday for allegedly demanding bribe to clear a cheque under NREGS.
Police said the complainant, who worked under a NREGA scheme, reportedly went to Chikli Taluka post office to get his cheque cleared. Postmaster Kiran Jain allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 from the complainant.
ACB Inspector K S Patel said: “The worker had received some payment under the NREGS and went to collect his cheque. The complainant’s cheque came from the Taluka Development Officer on May 10. The post office received it on May 15. The postmaster had to sign the cheque and deposit it in worker’s account for clearance. But Jain did not sign it and when the worker requested him to sign it on Wednesday, he demanded Rs 5,000 for it.”
He added: “The complainant approached the Navsari ACB. The ACB laid a trap and nabbed Jain while he was taking the money from the complainant at the Chikli post office.”
The ACB has booked the accused under Prevention of Corruption Act and has begun further probe on him.
